Hello! Welcome to science facts with The Science and Maths Zone. From the weird to the super interesting this post will regularly add new science facts (well we’ll try!).
We’re always searching for new facts so if you have your own please share it in the comments below. If it checks out we’ll add it to the post with credit.

It’s estimated that every second approximately one hundred bolts of lightening strike the surface of the Earth. That’s over 8 million a day! (Credit: Luke – comments section)
5
As frogs shed their skin they push it into their mouths to eat it. This sounds kinda gross but is thought to serve a useful purpose. This skin contains lots of useful components including proteins and so this allows them to recover them. (Credit: Helin – comments section)
6
Atoms are made up of over 99.9% empty space!
7
The average heart beats around 100,000 times a day. That’s over 36 million times a year!
8
It is estimated that there are 100 – 300 billion stars in the Milky Way. Although there are so many we still have a favourite – the Sun, what’s yours?
9
Currently the closest confirmed black hole to Earth is approximately 1500 light years away and is nicknamed ‘The Unicorn’.
10
Only 43% (approximately) of your body is made of human cells.
11
If a hole was drilled from one side of Earth to the other going through the centre it would take about 38-42 minutes to fall through it.
12
Humans can distinguish between more than 1 trillion scents!
13
On average about 300 million of your cells die every minute.
14
The sun makes up around 99.86% of the mass of the solar system.
15
Bananas contain lots of potassium which, as well as being vital for many functions in your body, decays – making them radioactive!
16
Einsteinium was almost the first element to be named after a living person. Unfortunately, Albert Einstein passed away before it was confirmed.
17
Your brain makes decisions before you are consciously aware of them.

22
It takes roughly 1.3 seconds for light from Earth to reach the moon.
23
Water expands when it freezes! This is unlike most liquids that shrink when they are cooled. Water does this due to the hydrogen bonds between each molecule.
24
The Dead Sea has about 8-10 times more salt than normal salt water. The extra salt gives it a density high enough for you to float on the surface!
25
The average person has about 10 litres of blood!
26
A baby is born with around 300 bones. As they develop some of these bones fuse together leaving them with 206 bones as they become an adult.
27
The liver has over 500 functions. These include producing bile, filtering blood to remove harmful toxins and making lots of enzymes and proteins responsible for lots of chemical reactions within the body.
28
Why does the Sun burn with no oxygen? This is because the sun isn’t a typical fire. the light and heat come from nuclear fusion reactions that don’t require oxygen to occur.
29
It is thought that up to 68% of the universe is made up of dark energy!
